Har Ghar Tiranga: How to Fly the Flag Correctly
The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has run every August since 2022, encouraging households to hoist the national flag at home in the week leading up to 15 August. If you are participating, the Flag Code of India governs how it is done — and the rules are simpler than people assume.
Do:
- Fly the flag with the saffron band at the top, always.
- Hoist it briskly and lower it slowly and ceremoniously.
- Since the 2021–22 amendments to the Flag Code, the national flag may be made of hand-spun, hand-woven or machine-made cotton, polyester, wool, silk or khadi, and it may be flown in the open, day and night, at a home or building of a member of the public.
- Dispose of a damaged flag privately and respectfully, not in a dustbin.
Do not:
- Let the flag touch the ground or water.
- Use it as drapery, clothing, a table cover, or wrapping for anything.
- Fly it in a damaged or dishevelled condition.
- Print anything on it, or use it for commercial branding.
