What Is The Best Message For Diwali?

The best message sounds like it could only have been written for that person. Name them, mention one real thing and add one good wish. This is the difference:

Forwarded MessagePersonal Message
Wishing you and your family a very happy and prosperous Diwali.Riya, after the year you had, may this Diwali finally give you some rest. Shubh Deepavali.

If you want something ready to send, these ten work for almost anyone. Add a name at the start.

May your home stay bright long after the last diya has gone out. Happy Diwali to you and your family.

Wishing you good health, steady work and a full table of people you love. Happy Diwali 2026!

This Diwali, may you get what you worked for and the peace to enjoy it. Shubh Deepavali!

Sending you light for the days ahead and sweets for right now. Happy Diwali!

Aapke ghar mein roshni, dil mein sukoon aur plate mein kaju katli hamesha rahe. Happy Diwali!

Make A Diwali Card With Your Name

Type a name, pick a style, then save the card or send it on WhatsApp. The card is made on your phone and the name is not saved. If you send it as a link, the name appears in that link.

How Do You Wish Someone Happy Diwali?

In person, say “Happy Diwali” or “Shubh Deepavali”. A box of sweets is the usual gift. With elders, many families add a namaste or touch their feet, and the blessing comes back to you.

In a message, use three parts:

  1. Their name. It shows the message was meant for them.
  2. One real detail. A new job, a new baby, a hard year or a shared memory.
  3. One wish. Rest, health, a good result, or simply light.

Aman, new city and new job in one year. May this Diwali feel like home anyway. Happy Diwali.

Priya, congratulations on the baby’s first Diwali. May there be more laughter than sleep. Happy Diwali to all three of you.

How To Wish Greetings In General

The same rules work for any festival or occasion. Greet the person first, keep to two or three lines, match how you usually speak to them and send it on the day or the morning before. If they reply, carry on the conversation: that reply is worth more than the greeting.

How To Wish Diwali On WhatsApp

  1. Send close people a personal message. Use the three-part format above, rather than a forward.
  2. Send it on the morning of 8 November. Evening puja, guests and crackers leave little time to read messages after sunset.
  3. Use a voice note for parents and grandparents. Your voice means more to them than any image.
  4. Use a broadcast list with care. It only reaches people who have saved your number, and it looks like a personal chat, so write something that suits everyone on the list.
  5. Attach a card with a caption. Make one with your name, or save one of the images below, then add one personal line as the caption.
  6. Use Status for everyone else. A Status disappears after 24 hours, so post on the morning of the 8th. Short lines are below.
  7. Format the key words. Put *stars* around a word for bold and _underscores_ for italics.

Should You Wish Someone Happy Diwali?

Almost always, yes. A kind wish is rarely unwelcome, even from someone who does not celebrate. A few situations need more thought.

  • Friends and colleagues of other faiths: A simple “Happy Diwali” is fine. “Wishing you a happy festive season” also works if you do not know them well.
  • Jain friends: Jains mark Lord Mahavir’s nirvana at Diwali, so a warm, light-focused message suits the day better than a party joke.
  • Sikh friends: Sikhs mark Bandi Chhor Divas at this time, which remembers Guru Hargobind’s release from prison. “Happy Bandi Chhor Divas” is a thoughtful greeting.
  • Someone who has lost a family member: Many families do not celebrate the first festival after a death. Skip the cheerful greeting.
  • Someone you have fallen out with: Diwali gives you an easy reason to write first. Keep it short and do not reopen the argument.
For Someone Who Is Grieving

Thinking of you and your family this Diwali. No need to reply. I am here whenever you want to talk.

For Someone You Have Lost Touch With

What Is The True Message Of Diwali?

Diwali’s message is that light overcomes darkness, knowledge overcomes ignorance and good overcomes evil. The Upanishadic prayer Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya, “lead me from darkness to light”, says the same thing in three words.

The stories differ by region, but the idea stays the same:

  • Lord Rama’s return: In much of North India, Diwali marks Rama’s return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, when people lit lamps to welcome him.
  • Krishna and Narakasura: In much of South India, the focus is the defeat of the demon Narakasura, marked at dawn on Naraka Chaturdashi.
  • Goddess Lakshmi: Families welcome Lakshmi, who embodies prosperity, into clean and lit homes on the night of Amavasya.
  • Bali Pratipada: In parts of the south and west, the day after Diwali honours King Bali.
  • Lord Mahavir: Jains remember his nirvana.
  • Guru Hargobind: Sikhs remember his release on Bandi Chhor Divas.

Amavasya is the darkest night of the month, and that is when the lamps are lit. Nobody waits for conditions to improve first. That is the part worth carrying into the rest of the year.

How To Write Happy Diwali

In English, write Happy Diwali as two words, with both capitalised. Diwali, Deepavali, Deepawali and Dipawali are all accepted spellings of the same word. “Deepavali” is more common in South India and “Diwali” in the north.

In Hindi, write शुभ दीपावली or दिवाली की शुभकामनाएं. The formal word दीपावली has a long ई in the first syllable, so दिपावली is a misspelling. Both शुभकामनाएं and शुभकामनाएँ are widely used.

Diwali Shayari In Hindi

Fourteen original couplets, each with a Roman version for typing or reading aloud.

Ek diya maine bhi rakha hai dehleez par, shayad koi bhoola hua ghar laut aaye.

Shehar bhar mein jagmagahat thi us raat, mere ghar roshni tumhare aane se hui.

Andheron se keh do, hisaab baaki hai, abhi ek diya aur jalana baaki hai.

Sab ne ghar sajaya, kisi ne man nahin, diye bahut the, par ujaala kam raha.

Tel kam tha, baati bhi chhoti thi, phir bhi wo diya raat bhar lada.

Maa ne rangoli banayi, pita ne diye rakhe, bas itne mein poora tyohaar ho gaya.

Door ho to kya hua, ek call kar lena, awaaz se bhi to diye jalte hain.

Pataakhon ka shor to tham jaayega subah tak, jo dil se di hai, wo dua reh jaayegi.

Tum saath ho to ek diya bhi kaafi hai, tum bin saara shehar bhi andhera lage.

Lakshmi bhi usi dwaar par thehrti hai, jahan niyat ki roshni pehle pahunchti hai.

Ghar lautne ka ticket mehnga bahut tha, par maa ke diye ki keemat usse zyada thi.

Roshni baant do, kam nahin hoti, diye se diya jale, lau nahin ghatti.

12 Rangoli Designs For Diwali, Easiest First

The 12 designs below are original patterns drawn for this page, as a guide for the shape and colours. Choose by the space and time you have. Most of the small ones are done in under half an hour.

Before You Start

  • Materials: Chalk, rangoli powder or rice flour, a string for circles, and a paper cone or tea strainer for thin lines.
  • Clean and dry the floor. Powder clumps on damp stone.
  • Practise on newspaper if the design is new to you.
  • Work from the centre outward so you do not lean over finished areas.
  • Turn off the fan while you work with powder.
  • Make a thin line by rolling powder between thumb and first finger, keeping your hand low.
  • Keep diyas on a plate, away from the powder and flowers.
Four-petal flower rangoli in red and yellow with white dot border, easy design for beginners

Simple Diya RangoliEasy · 20 minutesThe diya shape is two curves and one flame. Draw it first, draw a circle around it, then add petals. Place a real diya beside the design, on a plate, rather than on the powder.
Five by five white dot kolam rangoli for beginners with red and yellow dots
5×5 Dot KolamEasy · 15 minutesMark five rows of five dots with equal gaps. Curve a white line around the dots without touching them. Rice flour flows well between finger and thumb and is the traditional choice.

Diwali Decoration Ideas For Home

  • Kandil or lantern: Hang it at the main door or balcony, with an LED bulb inside rather than a flame. A paper kandil is easy to make from a folded chart sheet.
  • Toran: Fresh mango leaves and marigold on cotton thread make the traditional door hanging. Put it up on the morning of Dhanteras or Diwali.
  • Balcony lights: Warm white strings run along the railing look neat. Use outdoor-rated lights and do not overload one socket.
  • Diyas in clusters: Three groups of five look better than a long uneven row. Soak new clay diyas in water and let them dry, so they absorb less oil.
  • Puja corner: Use a plain red or yellow cloth, a marigold string and a small rangoli in front. Keep cloth well back from the flame.
  • Floating flowers: A brass urli with water, petals and floating candles is an easy centrepiece when guests arrive.
  • Reuse what you have: An old saree or dupatta pleated over a curtain rod makes a quick backdrop for photos and the puja corner.
