Why the 14th and not the 15th
The Chaturthi tithi is running at sunrise on both days, which is why the question comes up every year. Ganesh Chaturthi is decided by the madhyahna rule, not the sunrise rule — the tithi has to be running at midday. On 14 September it is. By midday on the 15th the tithi has already turned into Panchami. That is the whole reason.
Muhurat timings by city
The madhyahna window is the middle portion of the day measured from sunrise to sunset, so it moves with your longitude rather than sitting at a fixed clock time. The published national reference is the Delhi window.

The count runs by tithi and not by calendar date, which is why the tenth day lands on 25 September rather than the 23rd. This is also the answer to the recurring "is it ten days or eleven days" argument — it is ten tithis.
The moon on Chaturthi
Tradition holds that sighting the Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi moon brings mithya dosha, a false accusation. The story is the Syamantaka jewel episode, in which Krishna was wrongly accused of theft after seeing this moon. Practically, the moon on 14 September is a thin four-day waxing crescent that sits low in the west and sets within about two hours of sunset, so the window people avoid is short. If you do see it, the traditional remedy is to hear or read the Syamantaka story rather than to worry about it.
Is 14 September a bank holiday?
Ganesh Chaturthi is a restricted holiday nationally, not a national holiday. Banks and government offices are closed in Maharashtra, Goa, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Goa observes a second day on 15 September. Elsewhere, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, it is commonly a restricted holiday that an employee may choose to take.
Because 14 September is a Monday and 13 September is the second Sunday, states with a full holiday get a three-day weekend running from Saturday the 12th. Check your own banking centre before postponing a branch visit — festival holidays in India are set state by state, not nationally.

Board decoration
A backdrop board is the single most searched decoration format this week. The version that photographs well is built in layers: a plain base board, a second cut-out shape mounted on foam tape about an inch in front of it, and a third layer for the arch or the shikhar. That inch of separation is what creates the shadow line that makes a board look built rather than printed. Cardboard from delivery boxes works as well as anything sold for the purpose, and is the only version you can recycle after the 25th.
Themes worth picking
- Mandir / temple makhar — a wooden chowki with a cardboard shikhar painted gold. The safest theme, works in any home.
- Peshwai wada — nauvari drapes, brass urli, paithani border. Needs a plain wall and good light.
- Flowers only — marigold and mogra on a bamboo frame. Highest impact per rupee, but buy on the morning of the 14th.
- Warli or Madhubani backdrop — white paint on a brown kraft paper roll. Cheap, and unlike anything else on the street.
- Eco / natural — banana stems, mango leaf toran, coconut, clay diyas. Everything composts after visarjan.
- Paper quilling and cut-work — the most time-consuming and the most impressive in close-up photos.
Skip thermocol. Several municipal corporations restrict it around Ganeshotsav, it cannot be composted, and it breaks into pieces that end up in the water at visarjan. Cardboard, cloth, paper and clay do everything thermocol does.
DIY decoration from things already at home
- Dupatta backdrop. Pleat a bright dupatta or an old saree, staple the pleats along a curtain rod, hang it behind the chowki. Ten minutes, zero rupees.
- Bangle chandelier. Stack old bangles in decreasing size, tie with thread, wrap with a fairy light string. Hangs above the makhar.
- Paper plate torans. Cut the rims, paint them, string them across the doorway.
- Newspaper rolls. Rolled tight and painted gold, they become pillars for the mandap frame.
- Mango leaf toran. Fresh mango leaves and marigold on cotton thread. The traditional entrance, and it costs almost nothing.
- Mirror work from old CDs. Cut into small pieces and glued around the arch, they throw diya light around the room.
- Diya rangoli. If you cannot draw a rangoli, arrange earthen diyas in the pattern instead and light them at aarti.
- Cotton and flour rangoli. For homes with young children, flour and flower petals instead of chemical colours.
- Kalash from a steel tumbler. A steel glass, a coconut, five mango leaves and a red cloth tied around it.
One safety line. Keep diyas and agarbatti at least a foot away from fabric backdrops and dried flowers, and do not run more than two light strings off a single extension board.
Why Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated
Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi. He is worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and as the deity of wisdom and new beginnings, which is why his name is invoked before any other at the start of a puja, a business, a journey or an exam.
The ten-day public festival is much younger than the worship itself. Household observance is ancient, and it was celebrated publicly under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the seventeenth century, but the Ganeshotsav visible on the streets today was revived in 1893 by Lokmanya Tilak, who turned a private family ritual into a public gathering that could bring people together across caste lines during colonial rule. That is why Maharashtra celebrates it at a scale no other state matches.

Bhog
Ukadiche modak — rice-flour shells steamed over a coconut and jaggery filling — is the classic Maharashtrian offering. Fried modak keeps longer if you are making them a day ahead. Puran poli, karanji, motichoor laddoo and a simple sheera all count. Durva grass matters as much as the sweet: the traditional offering is 21 blades, tied in bunches of three.
Eco-friendly visarjan
- Choose a shadu mati idol under two feet with natural colours. Plaster of Paris does not dissolve and the paint carries heavy metals.
- Use the artificial immersion tanks your municipal body sets up, or a large bucket or drum at home.
- Remove the nirmalya — flowers, cloth, decorations — before immersion and compost it separately.
- Pour the dissolved clay into a garden bed or a large pot afterwards. Many families keep a plant grown in that soil through the year.
